Immediate Spring/Summer 2003 News Release:
Mosquito Infestation
& The West Nile Virus:
OUTDOOR SWIMMING POOL PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM
Pre-Season Commercial Swimming Pool Care
Programs
In response to our Customer's growing concerns pertaining to the West Nile Virus and how
it will effect them and their residents, at Superior we believe an ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure!
Many concerned customers and their residents and in some cases
Health Department officials are calling and asking us; "How can we prevent mosquito
infestation in and around our closed swimming pools before and after the swim
season?"
In the spring, after the snow has melted and the ice in the pool
melts, the stagnant swimming pool water tends to turn green and has the potential to
become a mosquito breading ground. Similarly, after the swimming pool is closed in the
fall, and until the freeze, the same stagnant issues apply.
We are taking the threat of the West Nile Virus very seriously,
especially after the recent news reports, which indicated that over 1000 cases were
reported in the GTA.
Before you spend hundreds of dollars on quick cure remedies, there
are steps you and your building staff can take early in the spring to reduce the threat of
mosquito infestation and this ever increasing problem.
1) Remove all weeds and tall grass away from the pool deck and area;
2) Remove any garbage that may have collected on the pool deck over
the winter, especially cups, cans or any other container that could hold and contain
stagnant water;
3) If your swimming pool does not have a "safety" pool
cover, but rather is uncovered or has a "water bag & cover" system, then we
suggest the following:
i) If the pool is uncovered, we suggest that you purchase liquid
chlorine and add it to the pool water on a regular basis until you are ready to drain,
clean and open the pool;
ii) If your pool has the water bag & cover system, we suggest
that you have the water drained off the cover, remove any garbage, hose down the cover and
keep it drained until you are ready to open your pool;
4) If you are not planning on draining the pool right after the
spring thaw, we suggest you purchase liquid chlorine and add it to the pool water on a
regular basis until you are ready to drain and open the pool. Mosquitoes don't like clean
water! Please call us and we can help you with dosage requirements.
Yours truly,
