SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SPAS, HOT
TUBS & WHIRLPOOLS IN PROVINCE OF ONTARIO

YOUR
IMMEDIATE ATTENTION REQUIRED
On December 20, 2001, the Chief Coroner of Ontario
issued a release of safety recommendations for all public hot tub operations. These
recommendations are a direct result of the drowning death of a teen this past summer.
These new safety recommendations are in effect now and retrofits to your facility(s) must
be completed within six (6) months of the Coroners report, (i.e. December 20, 2001 to June
21, 2002).
Retrofits can only be performed by a valid
NSPI (National Spa & Pool Institute) member.
Dr. James Young, the Chief Coroner, said hot
tub owners and operators should ensure that:
·
Each bottom and side
suction fitting has a cover plate designed to reduce the risk of entrapment;
·
Two or more separately
located suction drains are connected to the hot tub pump;
·
A vacuum-release mechanism
is installed between the drain and the pump;
·
A clearly marked emergency
shut-off switch, separate from the hot tubs 15 minute timing device, is installed on
a wall adjacent to the hot tub.
Superior Pool, Spa & Leisure Ltd., is a
valid member of the NSPI, and we are currently installing and performing retrofits.
We are currently stocking and installing Anti-Hair Snare Plus anti -
entrapment drain covers, Stingl-Switch vacuum release mechanisms, Emergency
Cut-Off Switch signs and push button Shut-off-switches. The installation of
these products will ensure your facility is in full compliance.
If you have not received notification from
your local Health Inspector, anticipate its arrival. It is our recommendation that this
notice be taken seriously and that all public spa, hot tub and whirlpool owners /
operators implement the retrofit immediately.
