Regulation Amendments Passed
Into Law Effective October 01, 1999
The Ministry of Health is well "on track" in their revision to the
Public Swimming Pool Regulation 565/90. The proposed amendments to the Regulation came
before the government in late April.
As you know the basis of these amendments was the Health Regulation Review that was
completed in June 1995. High priority amendments were discussed with the Minister and PRO
Aquatics Branch proposed the following amendments at this time:
Effective October 1, 1999 the following amendments will be implemented:
The minimum age for lifeguards and instructors is dropped from 17
to 16. Assistant lifeguards minimum age will remain at 16 years of age.
The only lifeguarding certification that will be recognized will
be a current National Lifeguard Service Award (NLS).
The minimum certification for assistant lifeguards will be a current
Bronze Cross Award. The Lifesaving Society Distinction award will also be recognized as an
assistant lifeguard award.
The removal of the Canadian Red Cross Leader award from the Regulation
as a designated Instructor certification. Other Instructor certification designations will
remain unchanged.
